GIOVANNI di BORGOENA. - Spanish painter, documented from 1495 to 1533, died before 1544. Trained in the Italian manner, perhaps a pupil of Ghirlandaio, he executed with others the frescoes of the transept of the cathedral of Toledo (1495-96), where he worked again in 1502 and in 1508-10, always in collaboration, painting the altar of the chapel.
The celebratory fresco of the capture of Oran by Cardinal Ximénez dates to 1514. Contemporary with this are some scenes of the life of Mary and events from the New Testament, executed in bright and festive colors, with broad and assured drawing, despite a certain harshness in the characterization of figures and in the execution of drapery. From the same years are the famous portraits of the archbishops of Toledo. Other works by G. di B. include the frescoes of the Library, also in Toledo, the decoration of the hall of the University of Alcalá de Henares, and the altarpiece of the cathedral of Avila, considered among the masterpieces of Spanish painting of the early 16th century.
