GRÉGORICÌ, SIMON. - Slovene priest and poet, b. at Vrsno on 15 Oct. 1844, d. at Gorizia on 24 Nov. 1906, struck by apoplexy while celebrating Mass.
One of the most renowned poets of Slovenia, many of his poems, with a folkloric tone, are still sung by the people: "Ritorniamo nel paradiso alpino"; "Addio, mondo alpino"; etc. His lyric poetry is often inspired by a lively patriotism and, in its elegiac tendency, reflects the troubled life, the great sensitivity, and the frail health of G. (cf. "Il travaglio" [Človeka nikar]; "Il lamento dell'ucello prigioniero"; "Al pastore"). Among his epic compositions are to be noted: "Il giuramento di Jefte"; "Il testamento del 'hajduk'"; "Il lago di Rabelj". He translated Job, Jeremiah, and the Psalms into verse.
