HICKEY (*Hiquaeus*), ANTONY. - Irish theologian, born in County Clare at Thomond in 1586, died in Rome on 26 June 1641. He studied (1607) at the Irish College of St Anthony in Louvain, where he taught theology and philosophy, later moving to Cologne at the College of St Francis. In 1619 he was sent to Rome as WADDING, LUKAS (v.).
He wrote: *Nitela franciscanae religionis et abstersio sor-dium quibus eam consuperare frustra tentavit Abrahamus Bzovius* (Lyons 1627), published under the pseudonym Dermitius Thadeus; the incomplete *Commentarii in II. IV Sententiarum* (ibid. 1639), an erudite defence of the Scotist doctrine. He also wrote on the Immaculate Conception, on the stigmata of St Catherine of Siena, and an unpublished ascetical work. Death prevented him from undertaking the broad critical general history of Ireland, the plan of which he had elaborated with the help of some Irish scholars.
