IACHIN (Hebrew *jākīn* “He establishes”). — One of the two columns erected before the entrance of Solomon’s Temple (1 Kgs 7:21; 2 Chr 3:17); the other was called Boaz, the two names together forming the phrase “[God] establishes with strength.”
Name of several Old Testament figures.
1. Son of the patriarch Simeon (Gen 46:10; Exod 6:15), ancestor of the Iachinites (Num 26:12). In 1 Chr 4:24 he is called Jarib, perhaps through textual transmission error.
2. A priest (1 Chr 9:16) to whom David assigned the twenty-first service rotation (1 Chr 24:17).
3. A priest, most likely a descendant of the preceding, in the time of Nehemiah (Neh 11:10).
