**LÁMPROS, SPIRIDÓN.** - Historian and politician, born in Corfù in 1851, died in Athens on 23 July 1919.
In his youth, he founded and directed the literary periodical *I'zavxasôs*. After expanding his studies in Germany, he obtained the chair of history at the University of Athens (1890-1917). During the First World War, he led his country, but was forced to resign in April 1917, after which his property was confiscated and he was confined to Hydra and Skopelos. From there, he was brought back to Athens in poor health (20 March 1919) and died there. A prolific writer with a vast literary output, mostly historical, he left an indelible mark in original works such as *History of Greece* (6 vols., Athens 1886-1908), as well as in translations of the best contemporary historians. Among Byzantinists, his *Catalogue of the Manuscript Libraries of Mount Athos* (2 vols., Cambridge 1895-1900) remains indispensable, as does the journal *Néos* (Ελληνομάχων) (21 vols., 1904-27), which also included posthumous writings.
