**LAMPRONTI, Isacco di Samuele.** – Rabbi and physician, born in Ferrara in 1679, died there in 1756. He was a pupil of the rabbis Recanati and Sanguinetti of Ferrara and Provenzali of Lugo; then he studied medicine and philosophy at the University of Padua. After obtaining his medical degree, he resumed his Jewish studies with the rabbis Briel, Segré, and Cases of Mantua. From 1701 he settled in Ferrara, where he practiced medicine, taught, and preached. From
1718 he was part of the rabbinic academy in Ferrara. In 1737 he was appointed rabbi.
His main work is the Talmudic encyclopedia *Pahadh Yishq* ("Fear of Isaac"), which is the work of his entire life. For each keyword, he provides the tannaitic sources with their respective commentaries, followed by the *Gemara*, then the decisive commentaries and responsa. He draws extensively on the responsa of his contemporaries and predecessors in Italy, sometimes using unpublished materials. He addresses both legal and narrative-historical questions. The exposition is not systematic, yet it is of great practical value. He began printing it at the age of 70 and could only publish Vol. I; the continuation of the printing took place in various installments. Other works of lesser importance were mostly later incorporated into his major work.
