LÁMPROS, SPIRIDION. - Historian and politician b. in Corfu in 1851, d. in Athens on 23 July 1919.
As a young man he founded and directed the periodical Παργοσάς, literary in orientation. Having broadened his studies in Germany, he obtained the chair of history at the University of Athens (1890-1917). During the First World War he held the reins of his country, but, forced to resign (Apr. 1917), he suffered the confiscation of his property and confinement to Hydra and Skopelos. Brought back from there in infirm health to Athens (20 March 1919), he died there. A mind of vast literary output, for the most part historical, he left an unmistakable mark in original works such as the History of Greece (6 vols., Athens 1886-1908), as well as in translations of the best historians of the day. Among Byzantine scholars his Catalogue of the Manuscript Libraries of Mount Athos (2 vols., Cambridge 1895-1900) will always be indispensable, as will the journal Νέος Ἐλληναγνήμων (21 vols., 1904-27), also with posthumous writings.
