MACARIO, ABATE DI PELECETE, SANTO

MACARIUS, Abbot of Pelecete, Saint. - Born at Constantinople, ca. 820. Successor of St. Hilarion (end of the 8th century), he equaled him in zeal for the sacred images; he is called a thaumaturge for his intercession in curing illnesses and in obtaining rain. A man learned beyond the ordinary, he was ordained a priest by St. Tarasius; but he had to suffer not a little from the iconoclast emperors Leo the Armenian and Michael the Stammerer. At his death he was more than seventy years old, relegated in exile to the unknown island of Afrosia, perhaps the Daphnusia of Ptolemy. Feast on the 18th of the same month [September], of the translation on April 1.
