TARASIUS, Patriarch of Constantinople, Saint. - B. c. 730, d. in 806. Son of the civil prefect of Constantinople, he became president of the imperial Chancery (proto a secretis) under the empress
Irene, who influenced his election to the patriarchal dignity in 784.
Pope Adrian I, to whom the newly elected patriarch addressed a letter accompanied by a profession of faith, did not annul this election although he reproached him for the uncanonical manner of it. The times of iconoclasm counseled mildness with regard to the iconophile Empress and her protégé. Indeed the new patriarch won merits especially in the Second Council of Nicaea (ecumenical VII), which defined the veneration of the sacred images as orthodox. His decrees against simony were also salutary. Only in the question of the marriage of the emperor Constantine VI to Theodota, cousin of St. Theodore of Studium, did he at first show himself little energetic, so that Studites and the other zealous were displeased with him. But after the patriarch deposed the priest Joseph, who had blessed the sacrilegious marriage of the Emperor, he won also the praise of his adversaries.
T. gave an excellent example of Christian charity with the foundation of a hospital and houses for the poor. The Byzantine and the Roman Church venerate T. as a saint; feast on 18 February.
