TEOFANE III, patriarch of GERUSALEMME. — He held the patriarchate from 1606 to 15 December 1644; he was a bitter adversary of the Franciscans in the question of the Holy Places and did much to destroy the Union of the Ruthenians concluded in 1595–96. Nevertheless, in his correspondence with Urban VIII he also knew how to express peaceful views.
