TEOFANE III, PATRIARCA DI GERUSALEMME

TEOFANE III, patriarch of JERUSALEM. - He held the patriarchate from 1606 to 15 Dec. 1644; he was a bitter opponent of the Franciscans in the question of the Holy Places and did much to destroy the Union of the Ruthenians concluded in 1595-96. Yet in his correspondence with Urban VIII he was able to display peaceful ideas.
