THEOPHILACT, Archbishop of Nicomedia, Saint. - B. c. 765, d. c. 840.

He came to Byzantium around 780 and served Tarasius, while still a layman; he became a monk (c. 785) and was ordained bishop (c. 806). Following the example of the patriarch Tarasius, T. founded xenodochia (houses for pilgrims and the poor) and a hospital, kept a list of the poor near him to whom he gave alms monthly, also inviting them to his table.
