TEOFILATTO, archbishop of NICOMEDIA, saint. – B. ca. 765, d. ca. 840.
He came to Byzantium around 780 and entered the service of Tarasius, who was still a layman; he became a monk (ca. 785) and was ordained bishop (ca. 806). Following the example of the patriarch Tarasius, T. founded xenodochia (houses for pilgrims and the poor) and a hospital, kept a register of the poor in his care to whom he gave alms each month, also inviting them to his table.
