THEOPHYLACTUS, archbishop of Nicomedia, saint. – Born c. 765, died c. 840.
He came to Byzantium c. 780 and served Tarasius while the latter was still a layman; he became a monk c. 785 and was ordained bishop c. 806. Following the example of Patriarch Tarasius, T. founded xenodochia (hostels for pilgrims and the poor) and a hospital, kept a list of the poor whom he assisted with monthly alms and also invited them to his table.
