THEOPHYLACT, Archbishop of Bulgaria. - Ecclesiastical writer of the 11th century. Born in Euboea around 1038, he studied at Constantinople in the school of Michael Psellus. He was a deacon of St. Sophia when Michael VII Ducas (1071-78) entrusted him with the education of his son Constantine. Appointed archbishop of Bulgaria around 1078 (or 1092?) he had his see in Ochrida, where however he resided very reluctantly. He died presumably around 1108.
Noteworthy among his works are his exegetical writings and his letters. He commented on the prophets Hosea, Habakkuk, Jonah, Nahum, Micah, the Psalms and the whole New Testament, except the Apocalypse. His letters, 130 in number, addressed for the most part to high-ranking personages of Constantinople, to bishops his suffragans, etc., are a precious source of information about the cultural, social and political situation of the time; unfortunately the edition that we have of them is very defective.
Of T. there are moreover preserved some homilies, a discourse in praise of Alexius I Comnenus, a short treatise on the errors of the Latins, a Life of St. Clement of Bulgaria and a parenetic writing addressed to the prince Constantine his disciple. The 25 homilies that Sophronius Eustratiades published at Trieste in 1903 attributing them to T. are not his, but those of John IX Agapetus.
