THEOPHANES the CONFESSOR, St. – b. c. 760, d. 12 March 817.
He was a monk and abbot of the monastery which he founded at Agri, near Cyzicus, called *uìuìyàlòu 'Ayyòu*. He took part in the Council of Nicaea (787). He continued the *Chronographia* of his friend George Syncellus, which Anastasius the Librarian translated into Latin. Under Emperor Leo V (813–20) he suffered imprisonment for two years in Constantinople for the faith and then harsh exile on Samothrace, where he died. St. Theodore the Studite delivered a panegyric in his honour. His feast is celebrated on 12 March.
