THEOPHANES THE CONFESSOR, Saint. - B. ca. 760, d. March 12, 817.

He was a monk and abbot of the monastery he founded, τοῦ μεγάλου Ἀγρῶν (Agri), at Sigriane near Cyzicus. He took part in the Council of Nicaea (787). He continued the Chronography of his friend George Syncellus, which Anastasius the Librarian translated into Latin. Under the emperor Leo V (813-20) he suffered for the faith a two-year imprisonment in Constantinople and then a harsh exile on Samothrace, where he died. St. Theodore Studites delivered a panegyric in his honor. His feast is celebrated on March 12.
