TEOFANE the CONFESSOR, saint. — Born ca. 760, died 12 March 817.
He was a monk and abbot of the monastery he founded, τοῦ μεγάλου Ἀγρῶν (Agri), at Sigriane near Cizico. He took part in the Council of Nicaea (787). He continued the Cronografia of his friend Giorgio Sincello, which Anastasio il Bibliotecario translated into Latin. Under the emperor Leone V (813–20), he suffered imprisonment for the faith for two years in Constantinople and then harsh exile on Samotracia, where he died. S. Teodoro Studita delivered a panegyric in his honour. His feast is celebrated on 12 March.
