JOURNAL OF BIBLICAL LITERATURE. - It began publication in Middletown (Connecticut) in 1881 under the name Journal of the Society of biblical literature and exegesis, edited by the Society itself (Protestant). Its frequency was at first semiannual, then quarterly. With vol. 9 (1889) it took the name J. of b. l., which it still retains.

It deals in particular with ancient and New Testament exegesis. The material is divided into articles and shorter notes. The editorial committee has included: J. A. Bower, B. W. Bacon, Max L. Margolis. Among the principal contributors are F. Brown, G. F. Moore, Ch. A. Brown, P. Haupt, M. Jastrow.

The material is increasingly enriched by whatever can help to illuminate the environment of the Old Testament and by rigorous philological studies.
