FRANCESCO LICHETO (Lechetto), theologian of the Coist school and Minister General of the Friars Minor, was born in Lovere (Bergamo) and died in Budapest on 15 September 1520. He taught theology in Brescia and from 1509 to 1512 publicly lectured on the works of Scotus in Naples.
His commentaries on the first three books of the *Opus Oxoniense* and his *Quodlibeta* from 1512 onward were repeatedly published and included in the collected editions of Scotus’s *Opera omnia*. At the General Chapter held in Lyon on 11 July 1518 he was elected Minister General. He was charged with implementing the provisions of Leo X concerning the union of the various reformed branches of the Order. Within a short time he visited the provinces of Italy, France, Germany, Bohemia, and Poland; reorganized studies; and combated Luther. Leo X appointed him nuncio and apostolic commissioner with the task of collecting funds for the completion of the basilica of St Peter. After presiding over the provincial chapter in Cracow, he traveled to Budapest, where he arrived already gravely ill.
