LUCIUS (Lucio, Lucio), GIOVANNI. - Founder of Croatian critical historiography, born in Traù in September 1604, died in Rome on 11 January 1679.

He studied in Rome and Padua, and wrote: *Vita beati Ioannis episcopi Traguriensis* (Rome 1657); but his most important work is *De regno Dalmatiae et Croatae libri sex* (Amsterdam, 1666; 2nd ed. in I. G. Schwandtner, *Scriptores rerum Hungaricarum, Dalmaticarum et Slavonicarum veteres ac genuini*, III, Vienna, 1748; the 3rd ed., ibid. 1738, is defective), which contains many archival documents and writings by ancient and contemporary historians (in the appendix the unpublished *Historia Salvatissima* by the Split archdeacon ROMANUS). It covers the period from the beginnings up to 1420, and briefly up to 1480, and is also limited territorially, namely to old Croatia from Mount Gvozda to the Neretva and the Dalmatian cities and islands. scìo l'uomo solo, perduto nella fredda indifferenza di un universo muto e glaciale (III, 825-30, 957-1007), sempre insaziato: «Nec tamen explemur vitai fructibus unquam» (III, 1007; cf. V, 1274-79; 1407-29), accasciato dall'incubo della morte inevitabile (VI, 1238-46). L'amarezza triste e sconsolata che pervade tutto il poema è un'ulteriore conferma della radicale insufficienza del materialismo alla liberazione e alla felicità dell'uomo.

L'influsso lucreziano va da Cicerone, Virgilio, Orazio, Properzio, Ovidio, Manilio, attraverso la letteratura cristiana antica e medievale, fino a noi, provocando anche un poema di confutazione: Anti-Lucrétius, II. 9 del card. De Polignac (Parigi 1749).
