EDME MARIOTTE (TTE, MARIO). — Physicist, born in Dijon ca. 1620, died in Paris on 12 May 1684; prior at St-Martin-sous-Beaune (Dijon).
Having learned, through the Minim friar M. Mersenne (1588–1648), of the experiments by Galileo, Vianni (1643), Torricelli, Pascal (1648) and Pascal (1654) on atmospheric pressure and gases, he carried out many experiments which he described in his *Essai sur la nature de l’air* (Dijon 1676). He discovered the law, now known as Boyle’s and Mariotte’s law: the volume of a gas varies inversely with the pressure. He published a *Traité de la percussion ou choc des corps* (1676) and a *Traité du mouvement des eaux et des autres corps fluides* (La Hire 1686, posthumous). In chemical laboratories the *Mariotte bottle* is still used. He was one of the first members of the Académie des Sciences founded by the minister Colbert in 1664–66. His numerous writings were collected and published in Leiden in 1717 and in The Hague in 1740.
