**MATTIOLI, Guglielmo.** – Musician, b. Reggio Emilia 14 Oct. 1859, d. Bologna 7 May 1924. Graduated from the Bologna Liceo musicale in 1881, he later taught at the Reggio Emilia Scuola musicale and from 1895 to 1897 was professor at the Parma Conservatory; from 1897 to 1901 at the Pesaro Liceo musicale, and in 1901–1908 director of the Donizetti musical institute in Bergamo, where he also served as maestro di cappella at S. Maria Maggiore. After moving to Bologna, he became a teacher and director of the Liceo musicale.
An untiring and convinced pioneer of the reform of sacred music, he composed: masses, motets, psalms, hymns and organ pieces, *L’Immacolata*, a poem for soloists, chorus and orchestra, and several operas. At his death he left ready for the press a substantial *Trattato pratico e ragionato di composizione polifonica* in 7 volumes.
