They are at war with one another and the natural difficulties are extraordinary both in terms of the area’s extent and its wildness.
According to 1950 data, the population numbered 26,117 inhabitants, of whom 16,409 were Catholics and 1,900 catechumens; the rest were pagans. There were 11 main stations and 24 secondary ones, 10 churches and 25 chapels. The mission is served by 19 foreign priests and 2 national priests, 19 coadjutor brothers, 32 sisters, 40 catechists, and 56 teachers. There are 32 elementary schools and 4 vocational schools. Charitable works include 6 dispensaries, 4 hospitals, and 10 orphanages.
