NOBILL, FLAMINIO de. - Theologian and biblical scholar, b. ca. 1530, d. at Lucca in 1590. He devoted special attention to the Greek version of the Septuagint, actively collaborating on the Sistine edition of 1587 with other renowned scholars such as P. Morino and G. Maldonato. When the new commission was formed for the edition of the Vulgate (1586-90), Sixtus V entrusted Nobill with the task of collecting patristic testimonies concerning the ancient pre-Hieronymian version.
The abundant collection was printed in the notes to the *Vetus Testamentum secundum LXX latine editum* (Rome 1588). In this way, Nobill became the true pioneer of fruitful research, later perfected by P. Sabatier (q.v.), which aimed to restore the most ancient biblical text in use within the Latin Church. Some judicious *Annotationes in Veteris Testamenti LXX interpretes* by Nobill were even reprinted by B. Walton in his *Polyglot Bible* (VI, London 1657, no. 9, pp. 1-196).
