NOLIN, HIERONYMUS. - Jesuit, moralist, b. at Salorno (South Tyrol) on 30 Jan. 1838, d. at Vienna-Lainz on 7 Nov. 1922.
Having already been ordained a priest in the Order (1863), he served as professor of philosophy at Pressburg (1867–74), superior of the theological college at Innsbruck (1875–86), and editor there of the *Zeitschrift für katholische Theologie* (1887–91); subsequently, he held the chair of moral and pastoral theology at the University (1890–1909).
In addition to numerous articles contributed to the *Zeitschrift*, he authored a highly esteemed and widely circulated moral theology course: *Summa theologiae moralis* (3 vols., Innsbruck 1897), to which he later added as supplements: *De sexto decalogi praecepto et de usu Matrimonii* (ibid. 1898) and *De poenis ecclesiasticis* (ibid. 1899). All these works are notable for their clear exposition, logical organization of material, thorough command of the issues, and balanced serenity of judgment. They underwent continuous editions and updates during his lifetime and, after his death, were edited by his confreres A. Schmitt, A. Schönegger, and G. Heinzel (30th ed., ibid. 1951). One may also mention his theological-ascetical work: *Die Andacht zum heiligsten Herzen Jesu* (ibid. 1883), which likewise saw many editions and translations (Italian ed., Brescia 1910).
