NOLENS, WILLEM HUBERT. - Dutch sociologist and politician, b. at Venlo on 7 Sept. 1860, d. at The Hague on 27 Aug. 1931. Ordained priest in 1887, from 1886 until 1909 he was professor of social and political sciences at the episcopal Gymnasium of Rolduc.
From 1909 he taught labour law at Amsterdam. Having been elected, as early as 1903, leader of the Catholic State Party and from 1923 also Minister of State, he exercised great influence on Dutch social and educational legislation. In 1915, as envoy of his government, he succeeded in establishing the Dutch legation at Rome near the Holy See.
