NOLENS, WILLEM HUBERT. – Dutch sociologist and politician, b. at Venlo on 7 September 1860, d. at The Hague on 27 August 1931. Ordained a priest in 1887, from 1886 until 1909 he was professor of social and political sciences at the Episcopal Gymnasium of Rolduc.
From 1909 he taught labor law in Amsterdam. Having been elected head of the Catholic State Party as early as 1903 and, from 1923, also a Minister of State, he exercised great influence on Dutch social and educational legislation. In 1915, as his government’s envoy, he succeeded in establishing the Dutch legation to the Holy See in Rome.
