NOLENS, WILLEM HUBERT. - Dutch sociologist and politician, b. at Venlo on 7 Sept. 1860, d. at The Hague on 27 Aug. 1931. Ordained a priest in 1887, from 1886 until 1909 he was professor of social and political sciences at the episcopal Gymnasium of Rolduc.
From 1909 he taught labor law at Amsterdam. Having been elected, as early as 1903, head of the Catholic State Party and from 1923 also Minister of State, he had a great influence on Dutch social and educational legislation. In 1915 he succeeded, as an envoy of his government, in founding in Rome the Dutch legation to the Holy See.
