Noldin, Hieronymus

NOLDIN, HIERONYMUS. - Jesuit, moralist, b. at Salorno (Alto Adige) on 30 Jan. 1838, d. at Vienna-Lainz on 7 Nov. 1922.

Having entered the Order already a priest (1863), he was professor of philosophy at Pressburg (1867-74), superior of the theological College of Innsbruck (1875-86), editor there of the Zeitschrift für katholische Theologie (1887-91), then professor of moral and pastoral theology at the University (1890-1909).

Besides numerous articles contributed to the Zeitschrift, he wrote a course of moral theology that was highly esteemed and widely circulated: Summa theologiae moralis (3 vols., Innsbruck 1897), to which he added by way of completion: De sexto decalogi praecepto et de usu Matrimonii (ibid. 1898) and De poenis ecclesiasticis (ibid. 1899); all works remarkable for their lucid drafting and logical division of the material, the full mastery of the questions, the balanced serenity of judgment. They had continuous editions and updatings through his own work, and, after his death, under the care of his confreres A. Schmitt, A. Schönegger, G. Heinzel (30th ed., ibid. 1951). One may add the theological-ascetical little work: Die Andacht zum heiligsten Herzen Jesu (ibid. 1883), which likewise had many editions and versions (Italian vers., Brescia 1910).
