NOLDIN, HIERONYMUS. — Jesuit, moral theologian, born at Salorno (South Tyrol) on 30 January 1838, died at Vienna-Lainz on 7 November 1922.
Having already entered the Order as a priest (1863), he was professor of philosophy at Presburg (1867–74), superior of the Theological College of Innsbruck (1875–86), editor there of the Zeitschrift für katholische Theologie (1887–91), and thereafter professor of moral and pastoral theology at the University (1890–1909).
In addition to numerous articles contributed to the Zeitschrift, he wrote a highly esteemed and widely circulated course in moral theology: Summa theologiae moralis (3 vols., Innsbruck 1897), to which he added, by way of completion: De sexto decalogi praecepto et de usu Matrimonii (ibid. 1898) and De poenis ecclesiasticis (ibid. 1899); all these works are noteworthy for their lucid exposition and logical organization of the material, their thorough command of the issues, and their serene, balanced judgment. They went through continual editions and revisions under his direction and, after his death, under the care of his fellow religious A. Schmitt, A. Schönegger, and G. Heinzel (30th ed., ibid. 1951). One may also mention the theological-ascetical work: Die Andacht zum heiligsten Herzen Jesu (ibid. 1883), which likewise went through many editions and translations (Italian trans., Brescia 1910).
