He entered the Vallombrosan Order during the lifetime of its holy founder. He received the name Ignatius because, by order of his abbot, he passed unscathed through flames to prove the guilt of Peter of Pavia, bishop of Florence, who was guilty of simony. Gregory VII created him cardinal bishop of Albano in 1074 and later often employed him on legations in Italy, France, and Germany. He worked greatly for the restoration of ecclesiastical discipline. He was immediately venerated in the Vallombrosa monastery, but his name was inserted in the Roman Martyrology only in 1673. Feast on February 8.
