FRANZ XAVER REMILING. – Priest, archivist, and historian, born at Edenkoben (Palatinate) on 10 July 1803, died there on 28 June 1873.
Archivist to the bishop, then parish priest, from 1852 canon of Speyer, official historiographer of the diocese and member of the Munich Academy, he published a series of accurate and well-documented historical works. The principal ones are: *Die Geschichte der Bischöfe zu Speier* (2 vols., Mainz 1832–54), followed by two further volumes as *Urkundenbuch* (up to 1803) (ibid. 1852–53); and as continuation: *Neuere Geschichte der Bischöfe zu Speier und Urkundenbuch* (2 vols., Speyer 1867); *Nikolaus von Weiz, Bischof von Speier im Leben und Wirken* (2 vols., ibid. 1871); *Karl von Geissel, Bischof von Speier und Erzbischof von Köln samt Urkundenbuch* (ibid. 1873). He also dealt with the history of abbeys: *Urkundliche Geschichte der ehemaligen Klöster und Abteien* (69 in number) in the Rhine Palatinate (2 vols., Neustadt 1836); *Denkschrift über das Reformationswerk in der Pfalz* (up to 1592; Mannheim 1847); *Die Rheinpfalz in der Revolutionszeit von 1792–98* (ibid. 1865; 2nd ed., ibid. 1867). Together with J. M. Frey he published: *Urkundenbuch des Klosters Otterberg in der Rheinpfalz* (ibid. 1845).
