RÉMUIZAT, ANNE-MADELEINE, Venerable. - Visitandine propagator of the cult of the Sacred Heart, b. in Marseille in 1696, d. there on 15 Feb. 1730.
She entered the Visitation monastery in Marseille, where she was told that she must continue the work of St. Margaret Mary. Her reputation for holiness soon became known outside the monastery. R. announced the plague that was to devastate Marseille if the city did not repent, and then its end on condition that the feast of the Sacred Heart be instituted for the day after the octave of Corpus Christi (1720). Several years before her death she received the stigmata. Her ashes were scattered during the Revolution, but her heart was saved and rests in the Visitation monastery in Marseille.
R. wrote the statutes of the Archconfraternity of Perpetual Adoration of the Lord, as well as an extensive correspondence with many people, though only a few fragments of letters addressed to her director, Fr. Girard, remain. There are also fragments of her writings in the works of Fr. Jacques, particularly in the biography of R. published by him in 1760.
