The SCUOLA STALIANA MODERNA is the oldest and most widely circulated journal of Italian teachers. It was conceived in 1891 and first published in 1893 by G. ROVINA (v.), in order to serve as a bulwark of the faith of practising Catholic teachers and to present itself with the compelling attraction of aiding them in the better fulfilment of their delicate educational task.
After a difficult initial period, in 1904 Brescian Catholics founded the non-profit-making Society “La Scuola,” with the sole aim of promoting the journal and expanding its apostolic efficacy. From that time onwards, thanks be to God, its growth was continuous and fruitful.
From the SCUOLA STALIANA MODERNA there sprang: Scuola materna, for nursery-school teachers; Supplemento pedagogico, for teachers; Educazione per le famiglie; Pubblicazioni di religione, filosofia, pedagogia, didattica, arte e cultura per educatori. Texts for primary and secondary schools; educational and recreational books for young people and adults; teaching aids: projection apparatus with a wide variety of related material, coloured wall-charts.
Since 1937, the large printing works, the premises for editorial offices, administration, dispatch, teaching aids, warehouses and refectory, have covered an area of 14,000 square metres. There are 250 people employed there.
