STOCHCIERO, GIUSEPPE. - Canonist, born in Arzignano (Vicenza) on 24 Sept. 1882, died in Vicenza on 4 Dec. 1946.
Having completed his studies at the Seminary of Vicenza, he was ordained priest on 30 July 1905; after several years of pastoral care as an assistant vicar in the diocese of Vicenza, he became secretary to Bishop F. Ridolfi; in 1919 he obtained a degree in canon law at the Apollinare in Rome; thereafter he taught pastoral practice and administrative canon law in theological schools; he was canon of the cathedral of Vicenza from 16 Dec. 1933. He had obtained the qualification for free teaching in Canon Law at the University of Padua.
He devoted himself to pastoral administrative practice and wrote numerous articles, pamphlets, a dozen volumes of pastoral juridical works, another dozen works on various subjects (educational, literary, historical); he also composed small manuals of piety and ascetics. His major studies include: Pratica pastorale (1921), Il matrimonio in Italia dopo il Concordato (1929), Il Diritto penale della Chiesa e dello Stato (1932), Il Codice del Clero italiano in regime concordatario (2nd ed., 1937), Il Beneficio ecclesiastico (1941-46).
