STÖCKL, Joseph. – Jesuit, military chaplain, missiologist, b. at Öttingen (Bavaria) 30 July 1676, d. at Graz 28 Dec. 1733.
He entered the Order in 1700 and was ordained priest, thereafter being assigned to the so-called military missions, i.e. as military chaplain to the imperial troops, first in the War of the Spanish Succession, then in the Serbian campaign (1714–18) with Prince Eugene of Savoy, to whom he was much dear. From 1720 to 1723 he served as rector of the College in Vienna; subsequently, his health failing, he was transferred to Graz to lighter duties.
