TARDITI, LIDEFONSO. - Scolopian, b. at Mondovì on 14 Dec. 1704, d. at Rome on 30 Dec. 1790.
For many years devoted to teaching, he had distinguished pupils, among them Cardinals Malvezzi, Livizzano, and Antonelli. Pope Benedict XIV, who held him in great affection, chose him from among all the scholars of Rome to translate into Latin his Institutiones ecclesiasticae and insisted that Tarditi’s name appear alongside his own on the title page. The same Pope appointed Tarditi rector of the College of Propaganda Fide, a position he held to universal acclaim for a full thirty-five years. The biography he wrote of his fellow-citizen Cardinal Bona was prefixed to the volume of Epistolae selectae (Turin 1754).
