TEODORICO DI VRIBERG (DI FRIBERG)

THEODORIC OF FRIBERG (also known as THEODORIC OF VRIBERG). - Dominican philosopher and theologian of the second half of the 13th century.

He studied in Paris around 1279. From 1293 to 1296, he served as provincial in Germany; in 1297 he became master of theology in Paris; in 1304 he participated in the general chapter in Toulouse, France; after 1310, no further information about him is available. He was almost completely forgotten until the study dedicated to him by E. Krebs in 1906. T. is a complex figure, both as a thinker and a scientist, within that Neoplatonic-influenced current descending from Albert the Great. In him, the Augustinian thought of the Dominican school of prognostication, which had been enriched with important Neoplatonic elements by Albert the Great and Ulrich of Strasbourg, unfolds under the impulse of the *Elementatio theologica* of Proclus, translated into Latin by Friar William of Moerbeke in 1268. From the One, through the Word, by an internal and effervescent process or "transfusion," all created things proceed. The "agent intellect" of Aristotle is identified with the "additum mentis" of Augustine (*De Trinitate*, XIV, 7, 9).

Among his many works, the treatise *De iride et de radialibus impressionibus* has drawn attention for its scientific importance.
