VULFRAMNUS (*Wulframnus*, WULFRAM), archbishop of Sens, saint. — Apostle of the Frisians. He belonged to the Frankish military nobility. Born ca. 630 at Mauriliacus, an unidentified place in the diocese of Meaux; died at Fontenelle ca. 698.
After having long lived at the court of Clotaire III and Thierry III, V. entered the Benedictine abbey of Fontenelle (St-Wandrille), probably around 687-88, at the time of the donation of the domain of Mauriliacus to the monastery. With some monks, among whom was the deacon Wandon, V. went around 689-90 to evangelize the Frisians, then subdued by Pippin of Herstal. He returned a few years later, perhaps discouraged by the meager results obtained among Radbod and his people or by the independent attitude of the missionary group of St. Willibrord. He was appointed to the archiepiscopal see of Sens (694-95), but then retired to Fontenelle where he died on March 20, under Abbot Hildebert. His body was buried in the chapel of St. Paul, then transferred in 704 to the main church. Feast in the diocese of Rouen on March 20, at St-Wandrille on June 19 (in memory of the translation of the relics in 1027).
