ADONISEDEC (Hebrew: « my Lord is justice »; Septuagint: Adonibesec). — Amorite king of Jerusalem at the time when Israel, led by Joshua, entered Palestine.
When the Israelites had captured Jericho and Ai, and the Gibeonites by a ruse joined them, A. allied himself with the Canaanite kings Oham of Hebron, Pharan of Jerimoth, Japhia of Lachish, and Dabir of Eglon. Besieged by the five kings, the Gibeonites sought Joshua’s help; he came from Gilgal to Gibeon in a single night, defeated the five allied kings, and pursued them as far as Beth-horon, Azekah, and Makkedah. With the assistance of miracles (stones from heaven, the sun standing still), Joshua annihilated the Canaanite–Amorite army, captured A. and the other four kings, who were shut in a cave at Makkedah, had them trampled by the chiefs of Israel, and then executed them. The five corpses were hung on five gibbets until evening, then buried in the cave (Josh. 10:1–27).
