ANTONEMARCHI, Francesco. - Physician, born in Morsiglia (Corsica) in 1790, died in Santiago de Cuba on 3 April 1838. He was chosen by Cardinal Fesch and Madame Letizia to replace O’Meara as Napoleon’s physician during his final exile. Having reached St Helena in September 1819, he remained there until the Emperor’s death, refusing to sign the autopsy report because he maintained that the cause of death had not been determined to be stomach cancer, as was claimed. In 1830 he served the Polish insurgents in Warsaw. Shortly afterwards he decided to publish the death mask taken from the Emperor’s face, but the uproar it provoked led to its being regarded as a forgery; consequently he left Europe for America, where he spent the last years of his life, first in
