ARMELI, MARIANO. – A Benedictine monk of the Cassinese Congregation, born in Ancona on 10 December 1662, died in Foligno on 4 May 1737.
A monk in the monastery of St Paul in Rome, he later became abbot in the monasteries of Assisi and Foligno. Through his familiarity with Antonio Magliabechi while in Florence teaching philosophy and theology, and even more through the exhortations and example of Prospero Mandosio, author of the *Biblioteca Romana*, he was led to compose his cycle of historical works:

**ARMELLINI, CARLO** – A figure associated with the question of the beatific vision, debated in 1331 following the well-known sermon of Pope John XXII. The Master of the Sacred Palace was compelled to abandon his reserve and take a position. He did so in a frank and ironic manner, which seems to have incurred the Pope’s disfavour.
Works: *Responsiones mag. Armandi, magistri Sacri Palatii de ord. Praed.* to 19 articles sent by the Apostolic Beatitude to Brother Armando, rector of the Sacred Palace (mss. in the Cambridge Library, J. 3. 10). A., recognizing that the articles censured by the papal commission of 7–8 September 1333 may admit of various meanings, inclines toward the more favourable interpretation and defends Thomas Waleys and Durand of St Pourçain.
In the writing *Epistulae de visione beatifica* (Cambridge, loc. cit.), he rejects the thesis of John XXII as a *modum novum et extraneum*.
He has other notable writings on the history of the origins of Thomism and on the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
