ANTONIO MARÍA ARREGI. - Spanish Jesuit, renowned moralist, born in Pamplona on 17 January 1863, died in Barcelona on 10 December 1942. After completing his usual studies, he deepened his knowledge of canon law in Rome under Fr. Wernz, before teaching the same subject at the major college in Oña and, from 1904, moral theology, which became his principal field. Rector and novice master at Carrión (1915–18), he again taught at Oña (1918–22), then was called to Rome to assist in revising the Institute of the Society of Jesus in light of the new Code. From 1925 until his death, apart from brief interruptions, he served as instructor for fathers in the third probation.
The author is chiefly known for his Summarium theologiae moralis, designed not so much for original study as for review and as a practical handbook for consultation. First issued privately in Oña in 1915, it was recast according to the new Canon Law and published in 1918; by 1942 it had reached its 14th edition with 150,000 copies, a success owing to its pedagogical qualities and doctrinal solidity. A Spanish adaptation appeared after the author’s death (1945). Another major work by the author, more specialized and intended for the formation of Jesuits, is Annotationes ad Epitomen Instituti Soc. Jesu, Rome 1934.
