ARRESTI, GIULIO CESARE. — Musician, born in Bologna in 1630, died there in 1695. Chapel master at S. Salvatore in 1668 and, in 1685, organist at S. Petronio, he was elected several times (1671, 1686, and 1694) “Prince” of that Philharmonic Academy.
He engaged in a bitter polemic with M. Cazzati, of which there remain a Dialogo fatto tra un Maestro ed un discepolo desideroso d'approfittare nel contrappunto (1659) and the Gare musicali (Venice 1664), containing music by both of them. As a composer he left: Kyrie for eight voices, Messa a Vespro della B. V. for eight voices (Venice 1663), Masses for three voices (Venice 1663), and a Partitura di Modulationi precezione sopra gl'inni del canto fermo gregoriano con le risposte intavolate in sette righe per l'organo (ca. 1664, n. p. [Bologna]). His organ sonatas were published in collections of the period.
