ASIOLI, BONIFAZIO

ASIOLI, Bonifazio. — Musician, born in Correggio on 30 Aug. 1769; died there on 18 May 1832. He studied composition in Parma and became maestro di cappella in Correggio in 1786; he then moved to Turin (1786), Venice (1796), and Milan (from 1799 to 1814), where he was appointed maestro di cappella and later director of studies at the Conservatory by the Viceroy of Italy. He composed masses, motets, Magnificats, Te Deums, and the oratorio *Jacob*. As a theorist, he wrote several didactic works, including *Principi elementari di musica* (1809), which was translated into various languages; *Primi elementi per il canto* (1809); *Trattato d'armonia*; *Osservazioni sul temperamento* (1816); *L'allievo al cembalo*; *Elementi per il contrabbasso* (1823); and *Il maestro di composizione* (published posthumously in 1832), among others.
