ASIOLI, BONIFAZIO

ASIOLI, BONIFAZIO. – Musician, born in Correggio on 30 August 1769; died there on 18 May 1832. He studied composition in Parma and became chapel master of Correggio in 1786; he then moved to Turin (1786), Venice (1796), and Milan (from 1799 to 1814), where he was appointed by the viceroy of Italy chapel master and subsequently director of studies at the Conservatory. He composed masses, motets, Magnificat, Te Deum, and the oratorio Jacob. As a theorist he wrote several works of a didactic nature, including Principi elementari di musica (1809), which was translated into various languages; Primi elementi per il canto (1809); Trattato d'armonia; Osservazioni sul temperamento (1816); L'allievo al cembalo; Elementi per il contrabbasso (1823); Il maestro di composizione (published posthumously in 1832), etc.
