Arregui, Antonio María

ARREGUI, ANTONIO MARÍA. - Spanish Jesuit, renowned moralist, b. in Pamplona on 17 Jan. 1863, d. in Barcelona on 10 Dec. 1942. After the usual studies, he deepened his knowledge of canon law in Rome under Fr. Wernz, before teaching that same law at the major college of Oña and, from 1904, moral theology, which became his principal subject. Rector and master of novices at Carrión (1915-18), again professor at Oña (1918-22), he was then called to Rome to collaborate on the revision of the Institute of the Society of Jesus in accordance with the new code. From 1925 until his death, apart from brief interruptions, he was instructor of the fathers in the third probation.

The A. is chiefly known for his Summarium theologiae moralis, conceived not so much for studying moral theology as rather for reviewing it and having at hand a practical tool for consultation. Published in 1915 at Oña in a private edition, recast according to the new canon code and made public in 1918, the Summarium reached its 14th ed. in 1942 with 150,000 copies, a success due to its pedagogical qualities and the soundness of its doctrine. A Spanish adaptation saw the light after the author's death (1945). Another extensive work by the A. is of a more specialized character and reserved for the formation of Jesuits: Annotationes ad Epitomen Iustituti Soc. Jesu, Rome 1934.
