ARREGUI, ANTONIO MARÍA. - Spanish Jesuit and renowned moral theologian, b. at Pamplona on 17 Jan. 1863, d. at Barcelona on 10 Dec. 1942. After the customary studies, he pursued canon law in Rome under Fr. Wernz, before teaching the same subject at the Collegio massimo of Oña and, from 1904, moral theology, which became his principal field. Rector and master of novices at Carrión (1915–18), again professor at Oña (1918–22), he was then called to Rome to collaborate in the revision of the Institute of the Society of Jesus in accordance with the new code. From 1925 until his death he was, apart from brief interruptions, instructor of the fathers in third probation.
Arregui is chiefly known for his Summarium theologiae moralis, intended not so much for the study of moral theology as for its review and as a practical reference tool readily at hand. Issued at Oña in 1915 as a private edition, recast in accordance with the new Code of Canon Law and published in 1918, the Summarium had reached its 14th edition, with 150,000 copies, by 1942; this success was due to its pedagogical qualities and doctrinal reliability. A Spanish adaptation appeared after the author’s death (1945). Another substantial work by Arregui is of a more specialized character and intended for the formation of Jesuits: Annotationes ad Epitomen Iustituti Soc. Jesu, Roma 1934.
