ONA. — Town in the diocese and province of Burgos (Spain), site of the monastery of S. Salvatore, founded in 1011 by the count of Castile and his wife Donna Urraca.
King Sancio of Navarre brought the Cluniac Benedictines there. The best-known abbot was St. Ifigo (Eneco), canonized at O. by a faculty granted by Alexander III. The elegant Gothic cloister was completed by Abbot Alonso of Madrid in 1508. In the artistic mausoleum situated in the transept of the monumental church rest the remains of four counts and four kings of Castile. Since
1880 the monastery of O. has been a Jesuit scholasticate with faculties of philosophy and theology. The professors there have included Frs. Antonio M. Arregui, Blas Beraza, and Juan Urráburu, and the Estudios Onenses are published there. — Vedi tav. VII.
