**PERGMAYR, Joseph.** Jesuit, preacher, and missionary, born at Hàblkofen (diocese of Ratisbona) on 4 February 1713, died at Munich on 23 March 1765.
He entered the Society of Jesus on 7 September 1733 and served as professor of humanities and rhetoric, becoming a renowned preacher in Munich. After his death, his spiritual instructions were published, based on writings preserved by religious women who had heard him, particularly the Visitandines, of whom he had been spiritual director for twelve years: *Gründliche Erwägungen ewiger Wahrheiten* (Augsburg 1778). The great success of this work led to the rapid publication of several other equally well-received writings, including: *Geistliche Grundsätze und verschiedene Unterrichten, welche in und ausser den gewöhnlichen Exercitien... gebraucht werden können* (ibid. 1787); and *Drei Schritten zur wahren und volkommerten Liebe Gottes* (ibid. 1778), his most famous and widely circulated work. All of these saw many editions and modern translations. He also composed a life of Fr. F. Jenningen (Ingolstadt 1763) and of St. Jane Frances de Chantal (Munich 1768).
