PERGMAYR, JOSEPH. - Jesuit, preacher and missionary, b. at Häblkofen (diocese of Regensburg) on 4 Feb. 1713, d. at Munich on 23 March 1765.

Having entered the Society of Jesus on 7 Sept. 1733, he was a professor of humanities and rhetoric and a renowned preacher in Munich. After his death his spiritual instructions were published, on the basis of writings preserved by nuns who had listened to him, especially by the Visitandines, of whom he had been spiritual director for 12 years: Gründliche Erwägungen ewiger Wahrheiten (Augsburg 1778). The great success obtained by this work was the cause of the rapid publication of various other writings, equally well received, among them: Geistliche Grundsätze und verschiedene Unterrichten, welche in und ausser den gewöhnlichen Exercitiens... gebraucht werden können (ibid. 1778); and Drei Schritten zur wahren und vollkommenen Liebe Gottes (ibid. 1778), his most famous and most widely circulated work. All of them, moreover, had many editions and versions, including modern ones. He also composed a life of Fr. F. Jenningen (Ingolstadt 1763) and of St. Jane Frances de Chantal (Munich 1768).
