of indulgence and a monthly plenary indulgence (Preces et pia opera, Rome 1952, no. 52, p. 21).
It is taken from the Spiritual Exercises (v.) of St Ignazio (no. 234), approved by Paolo III on 31 July 1548. It is the colloquy that concludes the first point of the contemplation for attaining divine love, and expresses the absolute, unconditional self-surrender that the exercitant must effect in order to order his love, as the result of the spiritual exercises. At the end of the second week, a total emptiness had been produced by emerging «dall'amore, volere e interesse proprio» (no. 189); this emptiness is now filled with the love of God. In response to the love manifested by God, it is the return of the friendship established with God, which presupposes the will to make use of divine gifts solely according to His good pleasure.
