BERAZA, BLAS. - Spanish Jesuit and theologian, b. at Begoña (Vizcaya) on 21 Dec. 1862, d. at Marneffe (Belgium) on 25 Jan. 1936.
Having entered the novitiate of the province of Castile on 8 Jan. 1881, he was assigned to the teaching of dogmatic theology, first at the Pontifical University of St. Jerome in Burgos (1898-1904), then at the maximum college of his religious province at Oña, which he followed to Belgium at the time of the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spain in 1932.
His principal works are four volumes of the Cursus theologicus onensis: De gratia Christi (Bilbao 1916, 2nd ed. 1929); De Deo creante (ibid. 1921); De Deo elevante, de peccato originali, de novissimi (ibid. 1924); De virtutibus infusis (ibid. 1929). If the breadth of the treatment far exceeds what is found in the usual manuals, the author nevertheless does not seek to produce a work of a personal character and stamp; its qualities are the wealth of bibliographical data and of the sources cited, the soundness of the traditional doctrine, and a lively pedagogical sense.
