BÉRAULT-BERCASTEL, ANTOINE. - Church historian, one of the most widely read of his time. Born at Briey in 1720, according to some in 1722, and died around 1794, in the fury of the French Revolution. First a Jesuit, then a secularized parish priest, at Ormeville, he made himself known as a poet and as a novelist, not excellent and not even among the most chaste. He then found his path in history, and published in no fewer than 24 vols. a Histoire de l'Eglise (Paris 1777-90), also published in the following century and translated into several languages, which was commended for its colorful and lively style. Inferior to the much celebrated Fleury, he remains far more distant than he from the Gallican tendencies prevailing at the time in which he wrote.
