AZPURU Y XIMENES, THOMAS. - Spanish prelate, b. in Saragossa in 1713, d. in Rome in 1772. He was a canon of Murcia, auditor of the Rota for Spain in Rome, and charged with the affairs of the king of Spain at the Holy See. He was invested with many benefices and many decorations; he published numerous pamphlets; but his greatest work was that which he rendered to the Bourbon kings for the attainment of their obstinate purpose of suppressing the Jesuits. He could not, however, see his work crowned with success, because he died a year before Clement XIV, in whose election he had cooperated so greatly with Azara, published the famous brief. In 1738 he had been elected bishop of Tortosa, and in 1770 archbishop of Valencia, without, however, ever taking possession of it. His correspondence, which has remained unpublished, is of great interest. As an agent, Charles III had appointed him his ambassador to the Pope.
