AVENTINUS, JOHANNES (JOHANN TURMAIR). — Born at Abensberg in 1477, died at Regensburg in 1534. He is the author of the *Annales Boiorum*, for which he earned the title of the father of Bavarian history. He scoured the archives of monasteries to gather materials, and in a certain way he anticipated the modern method of connecting causes and effects. Besides the *Annales*, which in the German translation bear the title *Bayerische Chronik*, he left a *Panegyrica oratio ad Carolum V et Ferdinandum Romanorum, Hungariae et Bohemiae regem de suscepto bello in Turcas*, a *Chronicon sive annales schieses*, and a Latin grammar.
He maintained a very ambiguous stance toward the Lutheran Reformation and shared the spirit of the Protestants, and in some respects even their doctrine.
