ASTALLI, Fulvio. — Born in Sambuci near Tivoli, of a noble Roman family, died in Rome in 1721. Clement X, bound to him by ties of kinship, enrolled him among the Clerics of the Chamber, introducing him to prelatures. Innocent XI later created him cardinal and entrusted him with the legation of Urbino, Ferrara, and Ravenna, where he displayed excellent administrative skills, firm in repressing banditry, shrewd in public works. He drained the marshes of Cervia. He was among the cardinals who showed the greatest opposition to Cardinal Alberoni and exercised great influence in the conclave that followed the death of Innocent XII.
