ASTALLI, FULVIO. — Born at Sambuci near Tivoli, of a noble Roman family; he died in Rome in 1721. Clement X, bound to him by ties of kinship, enrolled him among the clerics of the Apostolic Camera, setting him on the path to the prelature. Innocent XI subsequently created him a cardinal and entrusted him with the legation of Urbino, Ferrara, and Ravenna, where he displayed excellent gifts for government, being firm in the suppression of banditry and judicious in public works. He drained the marshes of Cervia. He was among the cardinals who showed the greatest hostility toward Cardinal Alberoni, and he exercised considerable influence in the Conclave that followed the death of Innocent XII.
