ASTALLI, FULVIO. - Born at Sambuci near Tivoli, of a noble Roman family, died in Rome in 1721. Clement X, bound to him by ties of kinship, enrolled him among the clerics of the Camera, setting him on the path to prelatures. Innocent XI then created him cardinal and entrusted him with the legation of Urbino, Ferrara and Ravenna, where he displayed excellent qualities of government, firm in the repression of banditry, prudent in public works. He drained the marshes of Cervia. He was among the cardinals who showed themselves most opposed to Cardinal Alberoni, and exercised great influence in the Conclave that followed the death of Innocent XII.
