Aschhausen, Johann Gottfried

ASCHHAUSEN, JOHANN GOTTFRIED. - B. at Oberlauda in 1575, d. at Regensburg in 1622. In 1609 he was elected archbishop of Bamberg by that chapter and in 1617 he also received the diocese of Würzburg.

In the see of Bamberg he succeeded the crypto-Lutheran Gebsattel and devoted himself to reform with great energy. He reorganized the diocese, forbade the preaching of Protestants in his principality, drew thousands of Lutherans to the Catholic religion, called in the Jesuits and entrusted to them the seminary for the formation of the clergy. His action in the diocese of Würzburg was most effective. Here he founded the University library; at Bamberg he built the Cathedral: in both dioceses he also reformed the life of the Benedictine monasteries.
