ASCHHAUSEN, JOHANN GOTTFRIED. — Born at Oberlauda in 1575, died at Regensburg in 1622. In 1609 he was elected archbishop of Bamberg by that chapter, and in 1617 he also received the diocese of Würzburg.
In the see of Bamberg he succeeded the pro-Lutheran Gebsattel and devoted himself to reform with great energy. He reorganized the diocese, prohibited Protestant preaching in his principality, brought thousands of Lutherans back to the Catholic religion, summoned the Jesuits, and entrusted the seminary for the formation of the clergy to them. His activity in the diocese of Würzburg was highly effective. There he founded the University library; in Bamberg he built the Cathedral. In both dioceses he also reformed the life of the Benedictine monasteries.
