Arrighetti, Giulio

ARRIGHETTI, GIULIO. - Born at S. Piero a Sieve in 1622, died at Florence in 1705. An uncle of his on his mother's side, Sbaccheri Iacopo, secretary of Cardinal Giulio Cesare Sacchetti, recommended him to the general of the Servants of Mary, who accepted him at the convent of the Annunziata in Florence. A novice in 1634, doctor of theology, teacher of philosophy at Borgo S. Sepolcro, of theology at Mantua, Vicenza, Florence, professor at the University of Pisa. Appointed provincial of Tuscany, he left the office in order to retire, on the advice of Fr. Segneri, to the hermitage of Monte Senario. In 1682, Innocent XI elected him general of the Order. Having laid down that grave office, he was sent by Alexander VII to the Annunziata in Florence, so that he might serve as an example by his holy life. There he shut himself in a cell and spent the remainder of his days in it. He is remembered «inter fratres qui cum sanctitatis fama decesserunt», with the title of venerable.
