SACCHETTI, GIULIO. - Cardinal, b. in Florence in 1587, d. in Rome on 26 June 1663.

He was vice-legate in Bologna, bishop of Gravina (1623) and nuncio in Spain (1624). Made cardinal on 19 Jan. 1626, he was transferred to the bishopric of Fano (17 March) and appointed legate to Ferrara and then to Bologna, where he remained three years. Twice papabile (1644 and 1655), Spain opposed his election, considering him a Francophile. He was a member of various commissions and headed the Segnatura for 23 years. Together with Card. G. B. Pallotta he patronized the erection of the church of S. Maria di Cibona, or of Monte Urbano, between Tolfa and Allumiere, and of the adjoining convent where the Hermits of Monte Senario (Servites) took up residence. He built a villa and a palace at Ostia, and in Rome he bought with his brothers the Palazzo on via Giulia, which still belongs to the family. Some of his letters and reports were published, as well as a memorial to Alexander VII that had wide resonance.
