SACCHETTI, GIULIO. - Cardinal, b. at Firenze in 1587, d. at Roma on 26 June 1663.
He was vice-legate at Bologna, bishop of Gravina (1623), and nuncio in Spain (1624). Created cardinal on 19 Jan. 1626, he was transferred to the bishopric of Fano (17 March) and appointed legate to Ferrara and then to Bologna, where he remained for three years. Twice considered papabile (1644 and 1655), Spain opposed his election, regarding him as pro-French. He belonged to various commissions and directed the Segnatura for 23 years. Together with Card. G. B. Pallotta, he sponsored the construction of the church of S. Maria di Cibona or di Monte Urbano between Tolfa and Allumiere, and of the adjoining convent where the Eremiti del Monte Senario (Servi di Maria) took up residence. He built a villa and a palace at Ostia, and in Roma he bought with his brothers the Palazzo in via Giulia, still owned by the family. Some of his letters and reports, as well as a memorial to Alessandro VII that had wide resonance, were published.
